Six months out from the Temora Warbirds air show we were disappointed that the closest available accommodation we could find was at Gryphon Lodge at Junee. The carport design is poor and one day we might change it but the really good news is that we have just replaced those rotting steps with a wonderful bridge form the carport to the back verandah - much safer and easy to negotiate even for most older folk. Our hosts very friendly and informative about the area, and we felt that we were staying with best friends.It was a shame that we had to leave early in the morning, but the Alpaca's gave us a friendly farewell.If we every get back to that area again, we would most definitely stay with Fran and Keith.More. If I had to find a negative about this place I would say that the road up to the house is a bit on the rough side (it is a farm though!) So nice to eat things picked fresh that morning.All in all a lovely relaxed break in an otherwise hot and busy trip. From small B&Bs to much larger guesthouses, the bed and breakfast establishments in the Gower Peninsula range from just one or two rooms in a family home, to en-suite rooms with dining and sitting room facilities reserved especially for guests, to completely self-contained suites with their own external access. Dinner on our final night was superb with Keith serving up juicy Junee lamb off the BBQ, as well as home baked bread. This turned out to be a lucky break for us as the place was great. We had the most delicious supper with a delightful salad, all from their garden, and lasagne to follow, probably our first home cooked food in three weeks, followed for dessert a Cafloutis with cherries, the best I have ever tasted. Spring and Autumn are great times to visit this part of the world and if you're looking for a country 'escape' that is still only 5 minutes to local town amenities then Gryphon Lodge is well worth trying. We all stayed up late on one of the evenings to watch a pivotal stage of the Tour de France, and we provided a special 6 course degustation meal to keep us all awake. Our room was modest but comfortable enough although I would have appreciated a second bedside lamp so that both of us could read in bed without disturbing the other. They are also excellent cooks and the added bonus of fresh vegetables and eggs from their farm make their meals special. It felt more like staying at a friends place than a B&B.
