It would have possibly been a better book if it had concentrated on just one or two of the three genres it tries to cram together like uneasy bedfellows: science fact, science fiction or fantasy. The science fiction is beyond words! My second book from Gibbins and this was a bit of a let down. Elegantly written and engaging. He makes an interesting point specifically with regards to bananas in Afric and the Americas. There are better options in this genre out there - if this had a less wordy approach and included more dialogue this may have been more palatable for me, however I have no inclination to read any more of this series.
