It was around 8 p.m. on the evening of November 24, 2009, when John Jones and his younger brother Josh Jones along with their nine other friends and family members entered the Nutty Putty Cave, deciding to explore the cave as a way to connect with each other ahead of the holiday. He found what he thought was the Birth Canal and inched his way into the narrow passage head first, moving forward using his hips, stomach, and fingers. Motola introduced herself to John, even though all she could see of him was a pair of navy and black running shoes. The first rescuer was Susie Motola, who reached John at 12:30 am, by which time John was already stuck for over three and a half hours.

They split up to search for it, and this was when John got stuck in one particular passage. Everything was ready, and they pulled as hard as they could. He didn’t even have room to wriggle back out the way he’d come. John Edward Jones loved spelunking with this family.

This was because John was stuck 100 feet below the surface and 400 feet into the cave system. The first rescuer to reach John was a woman named Susie Motola, who arrived at about 12:30 a.m. on Nov. 25. Shaun Roundy, one of the rescuers on the scene, explained the difficulties facing anyone, even experienced spelunkers, who went into Nutty Putty Cave. His arms were now pinned beneath his chest and he couldn’t move at all. He tried to exhale the air in his chest so that he could fit through a space that was barely 10 inches across and 18 inches high, about the size of the opening of a clothes dryer. Both Boy Scouts ended up trapped within a week of each other, and it took rescuers over 14 hours to free the 16-year-old Boy Scout.
