This part of the park, in deep pine woodland beneath Mica Mountain, has many intersecting paths but the three main cross-country routes are west to Douglas Spring/Tanque Verde Ridge, north to Italian Spring and east to Turkey Creek. The path up a cactus-studded ravine to the remains of Gould Mine is just over a mile but is often combined with parts of the Sendero Esperanza and King Canyon trails to form a circular route of 2.5 miles. Continue down the wash and take a left out of the wash, still on the Carrillo trail. The trail travels through a wide variety of plant and animal habitats. At 0.9 miles hikers pass the Sendero Esperanza Trail junction near the Mam-A-Gah picnic area, named for a Tohono O'odham Indian Chief. Trails. Great views, plenty of wildlife, and the high point of the Tucson Mountains. Along with the Douglas Spring route, the Tanque Verde Ridge Trail is the main path into the high elevation backcountry of the Rincon Mountain district, climbing nearly 4,000 feet to pass Tanque Verde Peak after 9 miles, then on 2 more miles to a 4-way junction with the Douglas Spring and Cowhead Saddle trails.
Just a short hike of a mile or so is rewarding enough, though the round trip to the peak (18 miles), passing through 6 discrete wildlife zones, can be done in one day. These signs also feature special exploration activities for youngsters.
The trail is not often used and overgrown in parts but the hike to the summit should be possible as a long day hike.
Signal Hill is a small, bushy summit crowned by boulders coated with desert varnish, into which are etched many petroglyphs dating from the Hohokam period of the 13th and 14th centuries. Not many people hike the full length as the scenery is little changing, but the west part can be used to shorten the Cactus Wren/Manville loop, as the Encinas Trail cuts across the middle.
The trail passes two abandoned cattle stations - Deer Camp after 1.25 miles and Hope Camp at the end, from where the North Hope Trail continues for 0.4 miles, across level, open ground that allows good views of the surrounding hills.
Like most paths in the park, the various intersections means that combinations hikes are possible; one option is to use the Sendero Esperanza Trail to reach Wasson Peak via the upper part of the Hugh Norris route, a trip (one-way) of 3.9 miles. Path over undulating terrain with good views and plenty of saguaro, close to the south edge of the park, accessed via the Hope Camp Trail from the Loma Alta trailhead; forms a 4 mile loop with the Coyote Wash Trail. The short Ridge View Trail climbs to a small hill below Tanque Verde Ridge, giving unobstructed views across Rincon Valley towards the Rincon Mountains. Last updated: April 30, 2019. The remote Miller Creek Trail begins outside Saguaro National Park in Happy Valley on Coronado National Forest land, along FR 35 and about 16 miles north of I-10, exit 297 (Mescal Rd). The east facing slopes make the Sweetwater Trail a good location for photographing the sunrise. Running across the northwestern corner of the park, the Loma Verde trail has a gentle gradient as it crosses undulating sandy land and small washes, in the shadow of the Rincon Mountains.
Pass the Loma Verde Mine, and take a right on the Pink Hill Trail. Horses are not permitted on most of the paths in the main (west) part of the Tucson Mountain District, where the hiking is generally more exciting.
The Cactus Wren Trail is the shorter, and forms the eastern half; the Manville Trail completes the round trip. The King Canyon Trail connects with other trails to allow you to climb Wasson Peak the highest peak in Saguaro West. Thanks to the generous support from our donors, FOSNP has been able to purchase five new mules since 2015 to allow the older members of the pack to retire. The trailhead is at the end of North Scenic Drive towards the north boundary of the park. For over a mile the path is through thick vegetation beside the creek, and almost level, but then begins a steady climb up a steep, manzanita-covered hillside, ending at a junction with the Heartbreak Ridge Trail. The hill is surrounded by flat desert so makes a good vantage point for photographing the wider landscape, as well as the petroglyphs. A 0.3 mile side path reaches Bridal Wreath Falls - occasionally a powerful waterfall but usually just a trickle.
Interpretive signs concerning the history and plant life along the way will take you deeper into the meaning of this "home in the desert".

The 1/4 mile (paved) Desert Ecology Trail is a self-guided interpretive trail where visitors learn of water's role in the desert; the trail has benches for resting amidst a natural cactus garden. 11 BEAUTIFUL THINGS TO DO IN SAGUARO NATIONAL PARK 1. The west fork descends down Rincon Creek back to the saguaro desert while the main branch - the Rincon Peak Trail - heads southwards, getting ever steeper and passing through pine forest of increasing height until the trees fade away near the summit to reveal outstanding views in all directions. Along the one-way portion of Hohokam Road, this short path crosses a dry wash and climbs to the top of a small ridge running southwest from Apache Peak, for superb views in all directions, especially north, over vast saguaro-covered plains at the edge of Avra Valley.
Easy trail with waterfall view One of two routes to the highest summit in the Tucson Mountains (Wasson Peak), this well maintained trail begins on Kinney Road just south of the park (opposite to and 0.1 miles from. The first trailhead is accessed in about 2 miles and begins at the Mica View Picnic Area. The signs at this intersection will point you north towards Wasson Peak. Most of the wash is surrounded on both sides by mountains so there are few distant views; instead, the path encounters the cacti and other plants typical of this region. Two paths lead north from the Signal Hill picnic area over gently sloping plains and dry washes near the west edge of the park, ending at the corner of Sandario and Rudasill roads, and together they form a loop of 4 miles. There are 31 moderate trails in Saguaro National Park ranging from 2.2 to 20.8 miles and from 2,214 to 7,014 feet above sea level. A steep section will lead to the Garwood Dam, built by Nelson Gardwood in the 1950's.

Most trails in the Rincon Mountain district of Saguaro National Park are in the northwest corner - a few along the one road through the park, the Cactus Forest Drive, one in Rincon Valley to the south, and a complex network of inter-connecting routes on the north side of Tanque Verde Ridge.
It climbs up a short steep canyon then follows a ridge of increasing height all the way to the summit of Wasson Peak, for unsurpassed views of the surrounding mountains and desert.
