Once the phasing is complete, athletics will save approximately $8 million annually as a result of these changes, but that does not reflect the entire financial picture, as the existing budget was insufficient to ensure those programs remained or became nationally competitive, and significantly increased investment would have been required. ATHLETIC 30. Toggle School of Earth, Energy and Environmental Sciences, Undergraduate Major Unit Requirements and WIMs, Involuntary Leave of Absence and Return Policy, Main Quadrangle • Memorial Court • Oval • White Plaza, Sexual Harassment and Consensual Sexual or Romantic Relationships, Student Non-​Academic Grievance Procedure, Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, Visitor Policy • University Statement on Privacy, School of Earth, Energy and Environmental Sciences, Emmett Interdisciplinary Program in Environment and Resources (E-​IPER), Institute for Computational and Mathematical Engineering, Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity (CSRE), Division of Literatures, Cultures, and Languages, Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies, Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine. Stanford’s more than 850 varsity student-athletes today represent 12% of our undergraduate population, a far higher percentage than exists at nearly all of our peer institutions. 1-2 Unit. In this interview for the Stanford Athletics Oral History Project, Ramón Saldívar, professor of English and comparative literature, describes his role as a faculty athletic representative (FAR) and discusses Stanford’s approach toward student athletes. To do so, we have historically needed to stretch our dollars further than many of our peers, especially in the competitive national landscape of intercollegiate football and basketball. There are only two other Division I field hockey programs and one fencing program on the West Coast, and there are no other lightweight rowing, sailing, squash or synchronized swimming programs on the West Coast. Over time, this decision will allow Stanford to ensure the continued national-level success of nearly 620 student-athletes. ATHLETIC 64. VARSITY - Swimming. VARSITY - Tennis. One of Stanford’s great sources of pride is our intercollegiate athletics program. It aims to document the program's journey from “good to great,” identify individual contributors and institutional decisions contributing to program growth, and situate Stanford’s program in the broader context of collegiate athletics.

Over the course of our storied history, through innumerable days of challenge, triumph and joy, our student-athletes have set the standard for exceptional achievement in both academics and athletics. 1-2 Unit. Others are directly related to the discontinuation of 11 varsity sports, and the associated reduction in staffing needs in certain support areas. This course is offered to Martial Arts athletes who participate on credit approved Martial Arts teams. ATHLETIC 12.
Although there is no limitation on the number of activity classes in which a student may enroll, no more than 8 units of these activity classes (and/or other University activity classes) may be applied toward undergraduate graduation requirements. In fact, only one university at the Division I FBS level sponsored more varsity sports than Stanford prior to this change, and that institution does so with a significantly larger budget. VARSITY - Basketball.

ATHLETIC 36. This course is offered to club members who participate on credit approved Club Sports teams. 16.

VARSITY - Football. Designed for the Varsity Athlete; conditioning; practice; game preparation; and weight training. 1-2 Unit. Over the past several months, Stanford Athletics has undertaken significant cost-saving measures. ATHLETIC 25. The contracts of affected coaches will be honored, and any support staff whose employment is ending will be provided with severance pay. While painful, the discontinuation of these 11 sports at the varsity level and the associated reductions in our support staff will create a path for Stanford Athletics to return to fiscal stability while maintaining gender equity and competitiveness. 11. Stanford, California 94305. Stanford Athletics benefits from a robust community of generous supporters, but their philanthropy simply cannot cover the escalating costs of ensuring excellence across the board in our 36-sport model any longer.

1-2 Unit.

1-2 Unit. Decisions, decisions. By being the model of success, of universal opportunity, and of unwavering commitment to the ideal of the scholar-athlete. For weeknight ticketed events at Maples Pavilion, such as basketball or volleyball, we will stay open until 30 minutes before tip-off/first serve. These 11 programs consist of more than 240 incredible student-athletes and 22 dedicated coaches. VARSITY - Softball. Access Transcript Access Audio & Video In guiding students to engage with faculty and in supporting students’ personal and intellectual development, UAR encourages students to explore the full breadth and depth of their intellectual opportunities, to find their intellectual homes, and to discover a sense of belonging at Stanford. VARSITY - Soccer. Team-centered workshops are designed to address the unique goals of the participating team and to provide memorable active learning experiences to build team unity, reinforce team mission and vision, clarify team goals, roles, and responsibilities or teach mental skills.

VARSITY - Lacrosse. To be eligible for credit, teams must practice 2x a week for a maximum total of 4 hours and participate in 1-3 competitions in the quarter. After careful analysis, we concluded there was no realistic path to ensuring that they have all of the resources needed to compete at the highest level without hindering our ability to support our other 25 varsity sports. All teams and athletes on the team must complete 30 hours of participation during the quarter.

Those discussions included a thorough exploration of all potential revenue-generating and cost-saving opportunities. Limit 2 credits per quarter with a maximum of 8 activity units may be applied towards graduation. Why were these 11 sports selected for discontinuation? Academic and administrative units across the university already have been.

In fact, even after recognizing the full expense savings resulting from this decision, closing the remaining athletics structural deficit and ensuring the continued success of our remaining 25 varsity sports will itself require garnering resources that exceed that amount, and we are fully committed to that endeavor. 1.

0. 1-2 Unit. At the Oct. 22 senate meeting, Provost Persis Drell provided an update on the university’s finances and the senate voted on a proposal to add exemptions and exceptions to a policy setting a 100-unit limit for undergraduate majors.

We have calculated that the total incremental funding needed to permanently sustain these 11 sports at a nationally-competitive varsity level exceeds $200 million.
